About this deal

I have not worn them for more than a couple of hours at a time but had no discomfort during those sessions. We can see the 8-9kHz resonance peak might be slightly different in frequency between different couplers.

What’s more, if volume output isn’t as loud as it should be—and you know it’s not a hearing loss issue—it’s probably time to swap out filters. It’s subtle, but the bass carries real impact – at least when it comes to music that doesn’t demand outright slam. But calibration can help alleviate many common issues, such as the early low- and high-frequency roll-offs in many clone-coupler mics, and you can also retroactively correct any existing measurements, post-calibration. The ER4SR’s cable is braided above the Y-splitter, and is a bit more flexible than the ER2SE’s non-braided cable. I really hope they put out another iteration with dynamic drivers trying to further increase the speed, etc.So both the Etymotic ER2SE and ER4SR are tuned to the same target, and thus they sound very similar, when compared to other products. It has taken me awhile to get this impressions out due to work and business travel, but I have been able to sit down finally and get this impressions out. Either way based on them and previous experiences with Ety's BA designs I was a bit pessimistic about the overall profile being to my liking but I was pleasantly surprised, really: out of the Galaxy S9+ simply running them with Bit and Bandwidth Upscaling mode through the baked-in UHQ upscaler makes them perfectly listenable, no EQ necessary.

ER2SE is a great choice for audio creators and musicians on a budget, who require a precise and neutral sound reproduction. It does have more treble energy than the ER2SE, but it’s not bright, exactly, nor is it much more fatiguing. You might be able to get away with having waxy ears with most IEMs, but with Etymotics, your wax will come back to haunt you. cable still is removable/detachable (MMCX) and as such can easily be replaced should it ever malfunction. The anodized metal housings are corrosion-resistant and feature uniquely slim nozzles that make the earbuds comfortable during long listening sessions.

He's a big fan of tube amps and custom inear monitors and has published hundreds of product reviews over the years. Although similar in dimensions to the ER4XR, the ER2SEs don’t suffer from a very monitoresque presentation. Most of the new IEMs being released these days make an effort to deliver a visual statement, with smoothed, futuristic ear capsules, beautiful colors, or premium materials. The result is the need for higher SPL in the 2-5k region (lower treble) for compensating said resonance.

The ER2XR offers Etymotic’s renowned isolation featuring a variety of ear tips to provide 35dB+ of noise reduction so you will hear the detail buried in the mix without raising the volume to compensate for ambient noise . The IE 40 Pro, released end of last year, is a great monitoring IEM that has seen a lot of unanimous praise in these circles. The early ER•4p earphones were marvels of miniaturisation and were among the first commercial earphones to be based upon purpose-built, precision-matched and custom-tuned balanced armature-type drivers (then more uncommon than they are now). When the Etymotic ER4 was originally released, way back in the 90s, it was one of the first IEMs in existence. The detachable housings elongate the ER2SE lifespan as listeners can easily replace the cable if it frays. I’ve referenced Etymotic’s ‘high accuracy’ house sound several times in this review, so it’s only fair to ask what sonic characteristics define that sound.
