Digital Camera World is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Food-wise you’ll find seasonally-shifting plates and there are even plenty of alcohol-free beers available, too. Three centuries on, the English pub remains the ultimate happy place for those seeking refuge, recreation, or refreshment. We were staying in Kensington so a quick walk through Bromsgrove cemetery and into Chelsea lead us to The Fox and Pheasant, accurately described as a country pub in town kind of vibe.

At its best a great pub feels like home, or makes you feel like you’re at home - it’s not always the closest to where you are, but it’s a perfect fit with who you are. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). THE BLACKFRIAR, BLACKFRIARS, LONDON: The decor of this ‘spectacular and giddily eccentric’ Grade II-listed pub is inspired by the history of the site on which it sits - a 13th-century Dominican priory once stood here. When done properly, it amounts to a kind of roughspun luxury that’s every bit as cosseting as some glitzy grande dame hotel. The portion sizes are friendly when it comes to food but the real reason you’re here is for the craic. The pubs within the book have been selected for a number of reasons, but frequently exhibit architecture of particular historic interest or quirky interiors – “centuries-old snugs, elegant marble bar tops, rich wood-panelled anterooms and pressed tin ceilings”, as Husband puts it. The Milk House name stems from the original name of The Street, Mylk Street, and gives rise to a light-hearted dairy theme: fresh flowers are displayed in milk pails, an intimate dining area is separated from the restaurant with plaited hazel hurdles. The bar is a cosy refuge from the elements: log fires burn at each end on cool days, while elsewhere there are stone floors and an assortment of scrubbed pine tables, with old hardback books lining the walls. The Riverside is surrounded by gorgeous countryside, with 12 local circular walks, from three to 15 miles in length, on which guests can spot kingfishers, red kites and even otters.

The six bedrooms all have a contemporary-chic vibe with panelling, feature wallpaper, soft throws, and pleasing headboards. Each Halloween, the pub opens up the 'secret' bar, ‘a tiny and crepuscular space under the restaurant with its own concealed entrance’. There’s a good range, from hearty and traditional pub dishes (burgers, beer battered fish and chips) to salads. Chef Stuart Tattersall cooks superb steaks on a huge open fire in the restaurant, another welcome twist. The Advertising Standards Authority has received criticism after banning a cancer charity advert and a Calvin Klein poster ad starring FKA twigs.WHITE HORSE INN, AKA NELLIES, BEVERLEY: This Yorkshire 'institution' was originally a 17th-century coaching inn, the book reveals. England is brimming with wonderful pubs - which makes the establishments that made the cut for this new tome very special indeed.

Other offerings could include duck leg croquette in a peanut butter “soup” and a 65-day salt-aged pave of beef. If you love atmospheric photography, and love pubs too, you’ll want to get your hands on a copy of this book – Great Pubs of England by Horst A.Head chef Neil Borthwick is on the stoves and cranks out a deft French-leaning menu that’s always changing with the seasons. Having studied Journalism and Public Relations at the University of the West of England Hannah developed a love for photography through a module on photojournalism. Plates are kept simple with the short, daily changing menu – think turbot, cauliflower, apple and sultana curry, or pork belly with black pudding, mash and rhubarb. Below is a selection of evocative pictures of the characterful boozers that appear in the compendium. A country pub with good food and rooms, often full with a joyous noise of people drinking, eating, chatting and generally kicking back and enjoying themselves.
